Roman.vs.British empire?

While there are plenty of things to admire about the Roman Empire, the British Empire was far better in almost every way. The Hellenistic view of human beings was truly horrifying, and the slavery practiced by the Romans was far more brutal than anything the British did. The British certainly weren't saints, except by comparison. As an example to gain high rank in the Roman military you were required to kill at least 5,000 enemies. The brutality of Rome is covered over by the impressive accomplishments in arts, science, etc, but the human factor and the legacy they left behind doesn't compare well. Practically every tyrant since the Eastern Empire fell was trying to restore Rome, and several before. Napoleon, Mussolini and Hitler all used Roman symbols and pretended to be successors to Roman greatness. The Roman Empire was conquered by barbarians; Britain allowed her subjects to choose their own paths. The fact that the nearness of British brutalities, and the superior information we have about them, makes them more real to us than the countless bloodthirsty atrocities of Rome doesn't mean that they are indeed more real. There is no way of numbering Rome's victims, but they certainly dwarf the vast murder-mills of the Communists and Nazis last century. Many whole nations were destroyed and only the children survived in slavery. The first great murder of Jews was carried out by the Romans when they destroyed Jerusalem--2 million according to Herodotus. The Romans weren't all bad, of course, and I admire Marcus Aurelius and Cicero a great deal. But the whole Hellenistic culture makes me sick.
